The article presents a preliminary estimation of the possibility of using Stirling engines in power and waste heat utilization systems of LNG carriers. Flexibility of applying heat sources, very silent operation and very low exhaust gas emission are to the advantage of applying Stirling engines in marine power plants. Unquestionably, one strong point of Stirling engines is the fact that various heat sources can be used to feed them, including waste heat generated by the main and auxiliary engines and burning boil-off gas (evaporated cargo), which is especially important in the LNG carrier power systems. The discussed issues include gas demand by the main propulsion of LNG carriers together with the amount of boil-off, main propulsion power and electric power demand of LNG carriers of various sizes. Finally, an example system for waste heat utilization and reduction of toxic exhaust gases emission of the employing a Stirling engine is describe

The paper presents the results of experimental investigations of the flow generated by the controllable pitch propeller. The influence of the propeller pitch, rate of turn and rudder angle on the velocity filed measured behind the rudder for two different water depths were investigated. The model tests were carried out using twin propeller twin rudder car-passenger ferry model in 1:16 scale. The results of the experimental analysis allowed for the quantitative assessment of the velocity components distribution. The predicted flow field generated by the propellers near the quay wall during unberthing has been computed using CFD methods

This paper is aimed to clarify the notion of instant pivot point (as being well established in rigid body mechanics) and review its application in practical ship manoeuvring. The extension of the Vasco Costa original results to arbitrary initial ship manoeuvring motions is performed and a transient phase of the pivot point change is studied, especially with regard to ship crash stopping and turning (including inter alia a bow thruster application)

The brand new technologies more frequently revolutionize the conservative fields of the navigation, such as ECDIS for instance. The term of “E-Navigation” in the different forms is omnipresent in the major parts of navigation, tried to substitute old-fashion technologies. The pilotage service is one of them, remains immutable in its novelty and stays conservative from many years. The author focused on the technical aspects of the system named Remote Pilotage System, as an aid to the in-shore and sea piloting methods. The content of this article is focused on the analysis of methods for the voice-way information communication to the navigator and the different interface figuration for the pilot. The described researches are the part of holistic method of navigational information communication analysis for the Remote Pilotage System Interface

The paper presents method of safety water depth evaluation for ship approaching to ports. The method utilizes two models: real time simulation model used for determination of ships speed approaching to given port, and Monte Carlo model for determination of probability of accidental collision with the bottom. Minimal safety depth has been calculated with use of probabilistic acceptance criteria presented in the paper

In the following article the methods for establishing parametres of safe manoeuvring area are presented. The methods are constructed on the basis of deterministic and probabilistic models of ships’ manoeuvring in restricted areas. The reliance level has been established for these methods in which deterministic and probabilistic model of under keel clearance has been use

Navigational systems employed at LNG terminals assist the navigation of gas carriers along approach chan-nels and in port waters leading to LNG terminals. i.e. in restricted waters. The navigation in restricted waters is often referred to as pilot navigation. The term is derived from the fact, that a pilot assists in navigating through restricted areas, and the process of marine navigation the pilot participates is called pilotage

There are different scales related to time actually two the most important timescales are the TAI (Time Atomic International) and the UTC (Universal Time Coordinated). In addition to these times Satellite Navigation Systems (SNS) have developed their own system time: GPS Time (GPST), the GLONASS System Time (GLONASSST) and the Galileo System Time (GST). The sources, the generation and the relation between all these times and timescales are described in this paper. Additionally the time dilution of precision (TDOP) coefficient and the data concerning the time transmitted in navigation messages by satellites of different SNS will be presente

Simulators are useful in very wide field of current life. Very important is to know their advantages and disadvantages. One of the most important of navigational simulator using is deck officers training. Possibilities of using real collision situations for officers training can seriously improve knowledge about deck officers behavior in dangerous situations. Analysis of the possibility of using the NMS-90 simulator for ship’s collision reconstruction was the aim of experiment. Some problems of recorded data accuracy and simulator possibilities influence on accident reconstruction process are described in this paper

In convolution method of the determination of vessel traffic stream parameters, it is indispensable to know the distribution of braking time. In this paper, on base of simulations trials, the fitting the type of the probability distribution to data of vessel braking times has been done. To achieve this goal the chi square Pearson test has been use

This article analyzes the problem of opposite flow that may occur during the evacuation of people from passenger ships. The causes of evacuation opposite flow and methods of its investigation are given. Besides, the methods of taking account of opposite flow in evacuation models are analyzed. It is proposed to search for the critical value of density depending on the number of persons moving in the opposite direction

This article compares routes of a ship avoiding a tropical cyclone calculated by various methods. The calculations were done in the environment of evolutionary algorithms based on systematically received forecasts. The computational algorithms made use of the 1-2-3 rule, anti-collision plot, and the storm field defined as the cyclone fuzzy domain. The results have been compared with post factum analysis utilizing exclusively the full scope of weather analyses for the relevant moments of the voyage
