Relations between wear, technical state, symptom and up/down states of a machine are presented. The concepts of the quality, efficiency and effectiveness in a company are explained. The relationship is shown between the quality in a company and the boundary values of up state and technical state.

The development of marine propulsion systems is prognosed in relation to the fuels of the near future. Presented is a concept of a subsystem supporting the maintenance of present and future propulsion systems. The author also demonstrates the achievements of the Maritime University of Szczecin in the designing and implementation of a system for marine propulsion system maintenance support.

Requirements that sensors used in diagnostic systems must meet are defined. The sensors currently available are characterised. The possibilities of obtaining special sensors for diagnosing machines with piston-connecting rod mechanisms are presented.

The development of operating strategy has been presented, and the need to optimize the operation of vessel machines has been stressed. The achievements of the author's team in the scope of operation development and training have been presented.

Wyszczególniono proces zużycia i efekty zużycia oraz opisano relacje przyporządkowujące symptomom cechy stanu i/lub wielkości charakteryzujące proces. Przedstawiono istotę wnioskowania diagnostycznego i istotę diagnozowania maszyn agregatów z podziałem na diagnozowanie maszyn wirnikowych i diagnozowanie maszyn z mechanizmem tłokowo-korbowym. Podano metody prognozowania zużycia.
