Inland waterway transport is regarded as a very economical and safe type of transport. It is a very good alternative for some other types of transport (mainly road and railway). However the possibility of using this type of transport depends mainly on the degree of inland waterways development and inland fleet possessed by each country. In this connection the main aim of the article is to present the state of inland waterways (length and density) and also changes in the inland waterway fleet of European coun-tries. The analysis of the above-mentioned variables was based on the Statistical Office of European Communities data.

Inland waterway goods transport has got, in some European countries, quite an important share in the total goods transport. The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France are regarded as the main important countries, taking into consideration both the volume of the cargo transported and tonne-km performed. The tendency since the begin-ning of the 90-ies has been positive. There are strong fluctuations in such countries as Poland, Austria or Luxembourg. The volume of good transported by inland waterway transport as well as the tonne-km performed in selected European countries has been presented in the article. The countries are obliged to deliver the data on inland water-way transport to the Eurostat.

The article presents the European Union 95/64/EC Directive, which imposes the obligation of gathering data concerning marine transport by member countries of the European Union. There have been presented the main principles of classijying ports, cargoes and ships, and structure of data to be transmitted by member countries to the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat). The writer presents Poland's situation regarding the process of adapting Polish Public Statistics to the Directive's requirements. The principles of gathering, verifying and transmitting statistical data about marine transport in Poland have been briefly discussed.

This article presents the most important number values describing marine transport of countries that were members before 2004, countries that acceded in 2004, and candidate countries (23 countries altogether). Number of ports in a given country has been presented, divided into main ports and other ports. Vessel and passenger traffic as well as cargo handling have been analysed. The sea transport profile concerned the years 2000-2002, as far as ports go, and in the case of vessel traffic, the years 2001-2002. Information on cargo handling and passenger traffic covered the years 1997-2002.

Przeanalizowano ruch statków w porcie Szczecin według grup, typów i rodzajów statków. Wykorzystano w tym celu szczegółowe dane pochodzące z Kapitanatu Portu Szczecin za lata 1993-2001.

Analizowano porty przedpola portu Szczecin ze względu na liczbą podróży Między tymi portami a portem Szczecin. Wykorzystano w tym celu dane Kapitanatu Portu Szczecin o ruchu statków w porcie za lata 1993-2001. W wyniku Przeprowadzonych badań ustalono, ie w każdym z badanych lat rozkład portów Przedpola charakteryzował się skrajną asymetrią prawostronną. W analizowanym okresie struktura ta nie ulegała zmianom. Ustalono ponadto, ie ma miejsce znaczna koncentracja liczby podróży.

Scharakteryzowano infrastrukturą transportową niemieckiego landu Meklemburgii - Pomorze Przednie (M - V) oraz dostępność transportową portów ^orskich zlokalizowanych na jego terenie. Dokonano klasyfikacji portów ze 'względu na ich wielkość i znaczenie dla transportu morskiego oraz obsługi pasażerów. Przedstawiono przeładunki w portach M-V w łatach 1999-2001 i scharakteryzowano poszczególne porty, uwzględniając powiązania transportowe z przedpolem, strukturę kierunkową ładunków oraz najważniejsze kraje biorące udział w wymianie towarowej z portami. Charakterystykę uzupełniono informacjami o liczbie obsłużonych pasażerów i statków zawijających do tych Portów.

Wzrastająca wymiana towarowa oraz ruch turystyczny w regionie Morza Bałtyckiego wymuszają na bazach promowych usprawnianie obsługi oraz dostępności do portu od strony zaplecza i przedpola, a na przewoźnikach wprowadzanie nowych coraz szybszych i komfortowych jednostek W artykule zaprezentowano zmiany, jakie nastąpiły w porcie w Rostoku w zakresie obsługi pasażerów i drobnicy promowej w ostatnich dziesięciu latach. Przedstawione zostały etapy powstawania bazy promów morskich w porcie, jej obecny kształt, a także dalsze plany rozwoju. Scharakteryzowano również flotę; jaką dysponują najważniejsi przewoźnicy promowi obsługujący połączenia z tego portu.

Badania najważniejszych portów bałtyckiego przedpola portu Szczecin objęły lata 1995 - 1998 Wykorzystano w tym celu bazę danych Kapitanatu Portu Szczecin Scharakteryzowano najważniejsze porty biorąc pod uwagę masę ładunkową, liczbę wykonanych podróży oraz strukturę kierunkową i rodzajową ładunków. a także średnią wielkość statków i wydajność przewozową.
