On 19 May 2005 entered into force new Annex VI of MARPOL Convention – Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships and NOX Technical Code for Diesel Engines. In October 2008 at its 58th session the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee has been adopted the revisions of actual air pollution prevention requirements. Revised requirements will enter into force on 1 July 2010. This paper presents significant among the revisions which are the phased-in reductions for NOX and SOX emissions and the extended application of NOX emission limits to existing engines;Kołwzan, Krzysztof;Adamkiewicz, Andrzej

The article justifies the need for diagnostics in the maintenance of gas turbine engines in power systems of vessels for production, handling and storage (FPSO type – Floating Production, Storage and Off-loading). It also presents basic features and specifications of turbine engines used on these units as well as methods of obtaining diagnostic information in the maintenance of turbine engines. Parameters of diagnostic signal models (heat-flow, vibroacoustic and exhaust emissions) and methods of their measurement have been identified. Methods of application of on- and off-line data for maintenance purposes have been diversifie

The paper defines the meaning of local and average heat transfer coefficient. The most frequently applied experimental methods for its estimation, particularly between the fluidized bed and the surface immersed in it, are presented. The method for the estimation of the influence of position and movement of fluidizing column on heat transfer coefficient is propose

In model investigation of ship’s fluidised bed boiler the similarity theory has been applied, which permits to transfer the investigation results from the model to the real object. For setting the non- dimensional numbers in similar phenomena, the analysis of differential equations describing the examined phenomenon or the dimensional analysis is applied. The article presents an example of the search for the non-dimensional numbers characterising the phenomenon of heat exchange in ship’s fluidised bed boiler

The article justifies the need to analyse diagnostic relations for turbocharger operation purposes. Types of turbochargers most frequently used in modern marine engines have been presented. Turbocharger decomposition has been conducted on a selected example. The influence of typical inefficiencies in respect to symptom value changes has been worked out for each heat engine and sub-system. Validation of selected cause and effect relations has been based on operational experience in the technical scale

This paper presents the results of studies on the influence of unbalance of the rotor unit of a turbocharger on its operational parameters. Identification of the study object, a turbocharger of the NAPIER C-045 type, has been performed. The experiment was carried out at a test stand identifying turbocharger operational parameters belonging to the rotor unit unbalance group. Basing on the measured values and using a mathematical model, hypothetical values of operational parameters for different loads of Diesel engines were calculated. The obtained experimental results were compared to the calculated ones. On this basis, the studied turbochargers were classified into one out of three categories describing operational utility class of a given turbocharger. The order of sensitivity of turbocharger operational parameters to the unbalance of the rotor unit was establishe

This study shows the importance of correct operation of controllable pitch propeller for the safety of navigation. Operation of pneumatic control of controllable pitch propeller in a ship’s power transmission system was identified. The results of the change of the actual setting value measurements of the pitch screw propeller in the function of the value of the control air pressure have been presented. Recorded differences were assigned to operational degradation of the technical state of the pitch propeller control system. They were further confronted with the relationships between the design and time of operation. Possible consequences of operating a controllable pitch propeller with such a defect, and its impact on the correct operation of a ship’s power transmission system have been outlined. Operational requirements were presente

Searching for a safe ship, this paper presents operational strategies which are used for ship power system maintenance, conditions for their realization have been shown. The procedure of risk analysis has been decomposed and its stages have been discussed. Methods of risk evaluation and methods of ship power system threat identification have been analyzed. The choice of risk evaluation method has been made for the management of maintenance of elements of the system taking into account good maritime practice, ICM code, regulations of classification societies and international maritime organizations. Studies on possibilities of extending operational time of the engine from the main power system using risk analysis with the Expert Method have been presented. On the basis of the results of studies, applicability of the Expert Method for risk analysis on ships has been shown.

This paper presents the results of analytical studies on determination of vibration characteristics of cylinder liners of diesel engines based on the development and application of mathematical models. Mathematical relationships for cyclic deformations in a longitudinal cylinder sleeve for circumferential and radial directions have been developed. Sufficient convergence of the model with the results of practical measurements given in the literature has been shown.

Due to the development of alternative propulsion systems, there is a need for LNG tanker turbine propulsion plants to regain their competitiveness. Previous research revealed effective methods to increase the thermal efficiency of the steam cycle based on quality assessment, and it was proposed that the latent heat of the main turbine exhaust steam could be recovered. Research was carried out for the steam cycle using regenerative heat exchangers fed by steam jet injectors. In this paper, an algorithm to determine the operating parameters of steam jet injectors, and the calculation results for different drive steam parameters are presented. The obtained results will be used as input parameters for further heat balance calculations of the proposed regenerative steam cycles.
