Growing environmental protection requirements also include problems of ozone depletion by coolants. This article presents a possibility of using a cause-and-effect diagram, known as Ishikawa diagram, for an analysis of faults occurring in marine refrigeration systems. The analysis, focused on refrigeration systems installed in Polish fishing vessels, makes use of extensive faults data collected during research

Growing costs of ship operation and actions taken to reduce the emission of harmful components in exhaust gases make designers seek more effective methods of utilizing substantial amounts of waste energy in marine power plants. One such method leads to the steam turbogenerator. This machine to run, however, requires substantially greater amount of steam generated in the waste heat boiler (compared to steam demand for heat-ing purposes). It is possible to supply a sufficient amount of steam if the waste heat contained in exhausts and charge air of the main engine is fully utilized. This article analyzes the influence of some methods of using waste heat from exhaust gases and charge air on the amount of steam produced in the waste heat boiler. The analysis takes account of boundary conditions, such as steam pressure in the boiler and the minimum value of outlet gas after the boiler. The analysis is illustrated with examples of basic calculations for the waste heat boiler co-operating with a specific slow speed engine. Two variants of waste heat recovery installation solutions are considere

The paper presents an analysis of technologies usable at fishing vessels which ensure that fuel consumption by their power systems is reduced as well as the emission of exhaust gases. During the analysis the specificity of operational activities for fishing vessels and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements have been taken into consideration. Energy saving technological, operational and logistic activities have been discussed. Forecast savings regarding fuel consumption upon application of technological innovations at fishing vessels have been presented.

Fishing limits, necessity to cope with competitive fishermen of other countries, the lack of financial resources to purchase modern vessels have caused that more than 30% of the Polish fishing vessels operating at the Baltic sea were withdrawn from operation between 2003 and 2012. Vessels remaining in service, especially older types have to be upgraded by the owners towards: reduction in energy expenditure; reduce the number of crew boats by the expansion of mechanization of fishing operations; improving the safety of vessels and working on fishing boats. Uncoordinated modernizations of the fishing cutters prevent from comparing the obtained results. A research team of the Maritime University of Szczecin gathered opinions of the shipowners regarding the effects of the modernizations performed and conducted research which shall constitute the grounds to develop optimal directions for modernization and operation of the fishing vessels. This paper presents range and results of renovation and reconstruction the Polish fishing vessel DZI-102 operated at the Baltic sea.

The reduction of power consumption in the marine power engineering system is a way to decrase the emission of harmful exhaust gases components into the atmosphere, reduction of the vessels' operational costs and decreasing the amount of crude oil waste arising during fuel processing on ships. The solution of this problem can be achieved by maximising the recovery of waste heat from main propulsion diesel engines. The waste heat contained in exhaust gases, supercharging air and cooling water, may be used to increase the amount of electric power produced on the ship, heating energy and the amount of fresh water produced.

An analysis of the failures occurring in the energetic systems of Polish fishing cutters, covering the years 1999–2012, is presented in this paper. The structural age, size and number of Polish fishing cutters is also indi- cated herein. The eff ect of the failures on the marine environment has been assessed, taking into consideration a presumed fuel spillage depending on fish catch volume and an analysis of the biodegradability of various fuels. The subject of the analysis also includes the damage impact of transponders cooperating with a vessel monitoring system (VMS) on an increase of the risk of collisions between other off shore industry objects and fishing vessels.
